Latin Placement at the College of Charleston

Placement from High School

If you took Latin in high school, you do not have to take a placement test. Instead, you are placed into LATN 101, 102, 201, or 202 according to the number of years of high school Latin you have taken. See table below.

AP Credit

For AP or similar credit, please see the College’s policy on AP credit (http://transfer.cofc.edu/documents/transfer-credit/ap-credit-2019-2020.pdf).

Other Latin Placement

If you have Latin experience reflected neither on your high school transcript nor via AP, or you would like to try for a higher placement, you may take a placement test online through OAKS which is located in MyCharleston. Please complete the online placement test before attending orientation so that you can register for the appropriate course.

The optional placement exam consists of 40 multiple-choice questions testing your knowledge of Latin word forms and grammatical constructions as well as your ability to translate Latin sentences into English. The online test normally takes 30 to 45 minutes to complete. You may not use any supplemental resources (such as dictionaries, grammar books, or internet tools) to assist you with completing the Latin placement exam.

All Latin students:

Please meet briefly with your Latin instructor in the first week of class to verify that your placement is correct. It is important to do this before the end of the add/drop period for class registration.
