Classical Charleston Lecture Series

Each year, the Department of Classics, supported by the Theodore Guérard Lecture Fund, to host "Classical Charleston," an annual lecture series begun in 2012. The series brings leading voices in Classics and related fields to campus, enriching the academic life of our community.

SC AIA Society

The Department partners with the South Carolina Chapter of the Archaeologcial Institute of America on its annual lecture series and other events that promote the study of archaeology at the College and in the wider community.

K-12 Events

The Classics Department at the College of Charleston has partnered with the South Carolina Junior Classical League in hosting "Classics Day," a one-day event that features presentations of faculty members on all manner of subjects from the classical world. The most recent Classics Day events at CofC were on November 4, 2017 and November, 2018. CofC faculty also participated in the Classics Day at Furman University in 2019.

Another event hosted by the deparment is Classics in the Lowcountry. High school juniors and seniors are to join us to tour the College of Charleston's beautiful campus and also find out what "Classics" is. Prospective students have opportunities to visit various types of college classes (Greek and Latin language, history, literature-in-translation classes), meet with the members of the faculty and current students majoring or minoring in Classics, discuss research opportunities, learn about the Honors College, and tour the College’s historic campus.

Classics faculty also visit classrooms for special presentations and/or Q&A sessions. If you are interested in having someone visit your class, please e-mail Dr. Andrew Alwine.
